On 23 October 1970, Gary Gabelich set a new land speed record of 1001.67 km/h on Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with "The Blue Flame", a rocket car powered by a combination of liquefied natural gas and hydrogen peroxide. The vehicle was sponsored by the American natural gas industry. Shortly afterwards, Gas Magazine, a Houston-based business publication, released a 1/43rd scale plastic model of the record-breaking car as a promotional item. The model was made in Hong Kong and has exact proportions and decorations, but no moving parts apart from the wheels. 20,000 items were produced and could be ordered from the magazine at a price of 2 US dollars each.
